This is a somewhat confusing climax to a story arc that, in this reader's opinion, began with so much promise.
A mysterious doppelganger Clark Kent, who is not Superman, realizes he's in love with his Daily Planet co-worker, Lois Lane. Just as this Clark Kent is not what he seems, neither is she. A fugitive from a doomed reality, the pre-52 universe, this Lois Lane is on the hunt for answers. She agrees to dinner with Clark, even though she's a married woman and a mom.
The fatal attraction results in her son's abduction by her disappointed suitor, who turns out to be Mr. Mxyzptlk in disguise.
From there, the story arc becomes increasingly confusing, thanks in part to a tie-in with Lana Lang's Superwoman title. While both books had beautiful artwork and compelling stories, this reader came away with the impression that DC was not as much telling a story as attempting to eliminate confusion between two different versions of its' iconic superhero by consolidating them. The concluding issue of the arc seemed to be an apology to fans for the new-52 relationship between Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane, which was not romantic.
In this final installment of the story arc, Superboy Jon saves the day by helping his parents remember they are a family. His pre-52 parents are united with the new-52 Superman and Lois, who remember and promise never to forget their love.
Huh?!?
In DC's new 52, Lois Lane rejected Clark Kent, who found solace in the arms of Wonder Woman, while Lois apparently was more attracted to a fellow reporter, who was not Clark Kent.
Without a Lois and Clark romance, sales of the reboot stalled.
Re-enter the pre-52 Superman and Mrs. Superman, Lois Lane, who now have an adorable son, Jon, that looks just like his father.
Sales of the family's title soared.
Good-bye, new 52.
Hello to the best of both worlds, the pre-52 and the new 52, as this Reborn issue allows DC to keep what worked best in each iteration of the Superman characters.
Super dad even gets a new costume, which in this reader's opinion, still looks like a red-belted blue leotard without Superman's trademark red swim trunks and yellow belt.
While this story arc had a satisfying ending, the plot device by which DC reached it was confusing. Nevertheless, I recommend this concluding issue. All's well that ends well.
Four stars only because you will need to look up past story lines and comics to fully make sense of everything.
DC has done a lot to drive away old fans in favor of younger hipper fans, the worst of which was eroding the hope that made Superman special. They have apparently seen the error of their ways and have crafted an epic run in which all that's great about Superman is front and center!
